4 ways psychology teachers can learn more about psychology

Updated: Oct 21

We all know that learning is a lifelong journey, and as psychology teachers, we've got to keep our knowledge game strong. But let's face it, textbooks can only take us so far. So, let's dive into 4 awesome and casual ways you can dive deeper into the fascinating world of psychology. Get ready to level up your know-how and inspire your students along the way!

  1. Read Psychology Books for Fun: Who says reading is just for our students? Grab a cup of coffee, snuggle up with a good psychology book, and indulge in some brain-boosting reading for yourself. Look for popular science books, deep dives into niche topics in the field, or even fiction that delves into psychological themes. I love to read, so you're in the right place to find loads of book recommendations here and on Instagram!

  2. Listen to Psychology Podcasts: Podcasts are the ultimate multitaskers' dream! Whether you're driving to work, doing chores, or taking a stroll, pop on a psychology podcast and let the knowledge flow. There are plenty of entertaining and informative shows hosted by experts and enthusiasts alike. I personally love Hidden Brain and Speaking of Psychology.

  3. Take Online Psychology Courses: Time to hit the digital classroom! Explore online courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or edX. These courses are taught by top-notch professors and cover everything from introductory psychology to advanced topics. Brush up on the basics or dive into the nitty-gritty—it's up to you! The brain dissections are a bit graphic in this free neuroscience course, but I'm feeling so much more prepared to teach the bio unit this year!

  4. Attend Psychology Conferences: Immerse yourself in a world of knowledge and networking. These events bring together experts and enthusiasts, offering keynote speakers, workshops, and opportunities to connect with teachers and others in the field. I attended the large APA convention in Minneapolis last year and gained so much knowledge applicable to teaching, but I also got a more complete understanding of the field of psychology in action. Many conferences also offer a virtual option now, so you can expand your search beyond ones happening locally and you don't need to worry about the additional cost of travel. Win, win!
